WASHINGTON, Nov. 23, 2010 - Afghan and coalition forces detained several suspected insurgents this morning and last night during operations throughout Afghanistan, military officials reported.

Several suspected Taliban were detained during operations in eastern Afghanistan's Pakitka, Paktiya and Logar provinces. The detainees are allegedly connected to various Taliban groups responsible for kidnappings, planting roadside bombs and coordinating attacks in the region, officials said.

Several other suspected insurgents were captured overnight in southern Afghanistan's Kandahar and Zabul provinces. The Kandahar operation netted individuals suspected of killing three Afghans and wounding four more in a Nov. 21 roadside bomb attack. The individuals are believed to also have ties with senior terrorist leaders operating out of Pakistan, officials reported. The Zabul operation resulted in Afghan and coalition forces detaining several individuals with alleged connections to bombing cells in the province, officials added.

In Khost province yesterday, Afghan and coalition forces captured an individual reportedly connected to a Haqqani network bomb supplier. The suspected insurgent was a top target for the combined force and was captured in the Sabari district. Several other suspected insurgents were also detained.

Afghan and coalition forces yesterday seized more than 40 pounds of opium in Kandahar province's Maiwan district. Tips from local residents sparked the combined force to plan and execute the operation, officials said.
