What You Should Know about Online Safety
We
want to ensure Veterans are equipped with the knowledge and tools they
need to secure their benefits. Here are some safe practices we encourage
Veterans to follow to stay safe online:
- Be mindful of the numbers you use: Do not include birthdays or Social Security Numbers (SSNs) in usernames or passwords.
- Beware of strange emails: Never click on unknown email attachments.
- Be careful where you click: Look for security-enabled website addresses that start with “https” (the extra “s” indicates security).
- Don’t share personal information online: Scammers use your social media profiles to steal your identity.

History of GI Bill of Rights
The
massive mobilization of industry and manpower with the United States’
entry into World War II lifted the nation out of the Great Depression.
But even as the country enjoyed new heights of economic prosperity,
American leaders worried about what would happen after the war. In 1942,
Roosevelt formed two separate committees to focus specifically on
programs to assist returning Veterans. Former American Legion National
Commander Harry Colmery wrote a first draft on hotel stationary of items
that should be included in future legislation. This handwritten sketch became the initial elements of what would become the GI Bill of Rights.
