Four-legged therapist brightens day of former pilot recovering from TBI

Much of Gabe Gonzalez’s day at the James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital Polytrauma Clinic is spent working with therapists helping him regain some of the skills and abilities he lost after suffering a major traumatic brain injury in Iraq.  But there’s one therapist in particular that puts a smile on his face every time he visits.

AMVETS recognizes VA employee for work on suicide prevention

ln March, AMVETS presented its Silver Helmet Award to Dr. Megan McCarthy, deputy director for VA’s Suicide Prevention Program. McCarthy received the inaugural Riders Guardian Award in recognition of her work in educating mental health professionals about topics relevant to service members and Veterans, including firearms safety.

Secretary visits memorial

[Video] “Prescribed to Death” opioid memorial raises awareness of prescription drug crisis

Acting Secretary Robert Wilkie visited the Prescribed to Death Memorial. The memorial is currently on display on the Ellipse near the White House. It displays 22,000 pills, each with a face etched into it, representing the 22,000 deaths per year from prescription opioid overdoses.

This week we honor Marine Veteran R. Lee Ermey.

He is best known as Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in the iconic military film Full Metal Jacket. His performance as Gunny Hartman earned him a Golden Globe nomination and the adoration of many aspiring to become a Marine.
