Forces Detain Militants, Find Weapons in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON, March 1, 2011 - Afghan and coalition troops detained six suspected insurgents and found several weapons stockpiles yesterday in Afghanistan, military officials reported.

Security forces detained six militants in Kandahar province's Zharay district while searching for a Taliban leader who is reportedly responsible for Taliban operations and weapons trafficking in the area.

Forces also found several weapons stockpiles throughout Afghanistan. The operations resulted in seizure of more than 2,000 assorted assault rifle and machine gun rounds, 45 mortars, 14 hand grenades, five pressure plates, three rocket-propelled grenades and various bomb-making materials.
